CRICKET
Some of India's most legendary cricket captains such as Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Rohit Sharma, Ravi Shastri, and Ajinkya Rahane will be joining the grand event on January 19.
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is organizing an event on January 19 to commemorate the renowned Wankhede Stadium's 50th anniversary. The festivities will be up on Sunday, January 12, and culminate in a stunning main event on January 19, which promises to be a thrilling evening for fans.
Renowned Mumbai icons and past and present Indian cricket captains, including Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravi Shastri, Ajinkya Rahane, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Diana Edulji, will meet to commemorate Wankhede Stadium's historical significance. This festival is designed to honor the stadium's important role in the sport's history. The main event will also include Mumbai's most prominent male and female cricketers from both domestic and international competitions.
However, Vinod Kambli is noticeably absent from the list of guests. The former Indian cricketer still has the second-highest score by an Indian batter in Test cricket at Wankhede Stadium. While former captain Virat Kohli hit 235 against England in 2016, Kambli scored 224 in 1993, his third Test match.
Kambli has recently had health issues, shown via a viral clip on social media last month in which he reconnected with his childhood friend Sachin Tendulkar to honor the birth anniversary of their late mentor, Ramakant Achrekar. Last month, the 52-year-old was admitted to Akruti Hospital in Thane for several weeks after being diagnosed with brain clots, a urinary infection, and other health difficulties.
The evening will be hosted by the renowned Mandira Bedi and Prasanna Sant, who will guide the audience through a series of enthralling performances and tributes. Attendees may expect performances by Avadhoot Gupte and Ajay-Atul, as well as a spectacular laser show.
As part of the festivities, the MCA office-bearers and Apex Council Members will release a coffee table book on January 19. A commemorative postal stamp will also be printed to recognize Wankhede Stadium's rich heritage. During the celebration week, on January 12, the MCA will hold a cricket match involving MCA officials, Consul Generals, and bureaucrats.
To acknowledge the contributions and commitment of Mumbai cricket's hidden heroes, the MCA will honor the groundsmen of its clubs and grounds on January 15, hosting the Polly Umrigar Health Camp and a special lunch for them. This will be followed by a ceremony honoring the members of the Mumbai squad that played the inaugural first-class match at Wankhede Stadium in 1974.
